Massage can help anxiety and depression

What is anxiety and depression? While anxiety is a general term for disorders that cause nervousness, fear, apprehension and panic, depression refers to disorders causing sadness, anger and feelings of emptiness.

Some studies have concluded that massage therapy can relieve anxiety and depression by affecting the body’s biochemistry. It has been found that massage therapy can lower the stress hormone cortisol by up to 53% and increase endorphin, serotonin and dopamine neurotransmitters that help reduce depression.

Massage can also accomplish physical changes where a general state of anxiety and depression has shortened abdominal muscles and tightened the diaphragm limiting the ability to breathe deeply. It can assist with the release of tension in the neck, chest and shoulders.

While my massage is not a cure for anxiety and depression, it can play a great role in their management. After my massage you may feel taller, more relaxed, have less pain, and a different outlook on your day with more positive thoughts. After a series of massages, you may feel that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that your emotions are under control.

Massage is the ideal treatment for depression and a tonic for the nervous system. It can heighten your mental state and enable you to sleep, digest and breathe better.

Massage has a role in pain management

A growing body of research shows that massage therapy can be an effective part of pain relief and pain management.

Some of the claims are: massage is effective for providing long-lasting relief for patients suffering from chronic low back pain – or – massage promotes relaxation and alleviates the perception of pain and anxiety in hospitalized cancer patients – or – massage is better than cold pack treatment of post-traumatic headaches – or – massages reduce incidence of chronic tension headaches – or massages reduce pain and muscle spasms in patients who have multiple incisions – medications dropped in hospitalized patients on days they received a massage.

It appears that massage is so effective because it is not only performed on the site of pain but rather holistically over the entire body systems. What about if I tell you that my massage can relax the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system, assist in draining the lymphatic system, can stimulate the digestive system, and balance the endocrine (hormones) system. Massage can also work on improving your state of mind, hence improve anxiety and depression.

Are you shaping your body for this summer?

28/9/13

Are you tired of suffering from cellulite, fluid retention, excessive weight, or lack of exercise? Are you trying to get in shape for this summer?

If you have decided to change your lifestyle to achieve your goal, then you could add massage or lymphatic drainage to assist you in your endeavours. Please also keep in mind that if you start an exercise program, start it at a comfortable pace because it is not a short term goal but a goal that will last you for the rest of your life. Measure your success in your consistency and quality of exercise versus quantity.

I can support your endeavours according to your needs at the time. For example, my relaxation massage can help you focus on your goals and soothe your aching muscles; my deep tissue massage can break down the fatty deposits or abnormal muscle contractions; my lymphatic drainage massage can get rid of the excess fluid and toxins in the tissue, and help you with recovery after exercise, as my remedial massage has the benefit to combine all of the above with the addition of techniques to work on specific muscle pain and dysfunction.

Many studies support my claims and I am “not just saying”. So make me a part of your support team and feel the benefits of massage. Feel good and look good this summer.

Why do we make a difference with our massage?

What’s the difference between one massage therapist and another? The simple answer is education. In order to be recognized by Professional Associations a massage therapist must have completed a minimum of 400 hours of study.
The more important answer is experience. Only with years of experience does a therapist develop their palpation skills, which is the ability to recognize by touch the underlying structure and the tissue changes in texture and temperature and apply the appropriate pressure and technique for a particular complaint.

It is also important to understand some of the important underlying dynamics of the mind and body in conditions such as stress, anxiety, depression and other chronic conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, lymphoedema, back, neck and shoulder problems. For example tension migraine is not necessarily treated with the same massage as tension headache.

With over 2000 hours of study and 19 years experience, I offer Relaxation, Deep Tissue, Sports, Pregnancy, Lymphatic Drainage and Remedial Massage Therapy. You should feel a difference after a massage; you could have less or no pain, less or no discomfort, stiffness and headache, feel more relaxed, energetic, even taller and clearer in your mind.

Massage can help relieve stress and pain in chronic conditions

Do you know that the global pain industry peddles more than $50 billion in drugs a year?
Yet, for chronic pain sufferers, over the counter pills are typically little help, while morphine and other narcotics can be addictive.  (livescience.com)

The good news is that research suggests that people can use massage for a variety of chronic conditions to relieve aches and pain, joint stiffness and stress. Massage actually addresses many chronic conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, back pain, headaches, anxiety and depression.

Interesting enough, a Canadian study said that the reduction of pain due to massages may be closely related to the reduction of pain due to anti-inflammatory medicine, while another study suggests that while some patients at a hospital were having massage, their medication dropped on that particular day.

I specialise in massage and I can help you manage chronic discomforts more naturally.

Pregnancy and Massage

Pregnancy is about health and wellbeing and all the changes that occur in a women’s body as a new life is forming – and massage is about promoting a healthy pregnancy and providing support to the expectant mother because the demands on her are great, physically and mentally.

The benefits of massage during pregnancy vary from relaxation of the body, mind and spirit to boosting the energy. Massage improves the blood and lymphatic fluid circulation and so helping in the management of fatigue, varicose veins and legs swelling. It also helps in the relief of back pain and the often associated sciatica pain due to the shift in the mother’s centre of gravity.

After birth, mother and baby can both benefit from a massage. Lymphatic drainage massage can help maintain circulation, prevent swelling, as LDM assist in hormones regulation and removal of wastes and toxins in the body. Massage can also speed up healing, improve sleep and breastfeeding.

Pregnancy and childbirth are natural and massage is about assisting you during this exciting and sometimes challenging time. Should you be unsure as to the safety of a massage during your pregnancy, please talk to your doctor or midwife, call us on 3264 6698

Find the Fountain of Youth with Lymphatic Drainage Massage

There has always been fascination with the Fountain of Youth. Some people say that it is in your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. Today many people turn to manual lymphatic drainage massage to release the Fountain of Youth, which is also better known as the lymphatic system.

Lymphatic drainage massage is a light touch technique with gentle rhythmical hand movements to aid the body’s ability to drain excess fluid, detoxify, regenerate tissue, and maintain a healthy immune system.

Lymphatic drainage massage is particularly helpful following surgery such as joint replacement, cancer and cosmetic surgery. During surgery, the fluid balance in the body is disrupted.  Anesthetic and tissue injury can overwhelm the normal channels to remove excessive toxins or wastes and swelling usually occurs. Lymphatic drainage massage can increase the range of movement by decreasing fluid in the joints; it aids draining bruises, swelling and anesthetic after cosmetic surgery. It can promote less visible, seamless and softer scarring. Lymphatic drainage massage can also decrease risks of infection and colds, as it boosts the immune system.

When combined with other techniques, lymphatic drainage massage is a powerful tool to increase the recovery rate after strenuous exercise, as it aids in the removal of metabolic wastes such as lactic acid and oedema.

I read articles where doctors say that effective manual lymphatic drainage massage definitely improves surgical outcomes and speed up recovery.

High blood pressure and massage

29/7/13

heart-md (Small)
Do you know that most cases of high blood pressure do not have an identifiable cause? – 90 to 95% cases of HBP are attributed to stress, anxiety and depression. HBP is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke and kidney failure. Based on self-reports from the ABS National Health Survey 2004-5, it is estimated that about 10% of the Australian population suffers from HBP. Isn’t it staggering?

One effective way to manage high blood pressure naturally is massage therapy. In fact, long-term studies have shown that a consistent massage program can decrease diastolic and systolic blood pressure.

In one particular study, the sitting diastolic blood pressure decreased after the first and last massage therapy sessions and reclining diastolic blood pressure decreased from the first to the last day of the study. Participants reported less depression and hostility and showed a decrease in the stress-hormone cortisol levels.

Besides, regular massage treatments also improve the nervous system by regulating blood pressure and reducing stress. Another study says that massages stimulate the brain, where hormone oxytocin is released to help reduce the heart rate.

To reduce your blood pressure naturally you can include massage in your healthier lifestyle.

Massage for asthma

22/6/13

Chinese-Medicine-on-Spring

We know that asthma is a chronic condition resulting in narrowing of the airways due to smooth muscle spasms. These episodes of breathlessness can result from exposure to an irritant such as cold air or an allergen such as dust mites, also following exercise or a viral infection.

Let’s look at the different goals we have when treating asthma with massage. First of all, we want to reduce the stress and anxiety attached to living with a chronic condition. To keep calm and avoid panic is essential in the treatment of asthma. We also encourage blood circulation in muscles of the chest, neck and shoulders; we drain the congested areas, and remove active trigger points. The rib cage, thoracic spine and shoulders are tensed and we can optimise their mobility by massaging the overused and tight muscles. Massage is particularly effective for children, and I would advise any mother of an asthmatic child to learn how to do it.

Anyone with asthma should also take the possibility of food intolerance or reaction to the environment seriously and seek expert advice.
