Venous insufficiency

Venous insufficiency is the term used to describe the poor venous blood drainage from a part of the body. When this situation occurs the load on the lymphatic system increases automatically and the major veins of the legs become dilated and tortuous and their valves do not function properly, as in varicose veins. Varicose veins can stay in the same condition for many years or they can gradually deteriorate to what is called chronic venous insufficiency.

A lymphatic drainage massage can help relieve the leg congestion, and help reduce scarring and fibrosis. Wearing a compressive garment can speed up the circulation allowing the muscles to contract against resistance, and so pumping blood and lymphatic fluid towards the heart. This also explains why exercise is so important.
