Prevention of lymphoedema

Lymphoedema patients should have a self-care program of regular gentle exercise, and wear compression garments or bandages. It is primordial to have a good skin care routine to avoid infections. A sign of infection should not be neglected and even the faintest sign of tinea should be treated immediately. It is important to avoid:

  • Cuts, abrasions or other tissue injuries
  • Sunburns
  • Direct heat such as hot baths and saunas
  • Wearing jewellery
  • Carrying heavy loads

It is advised to wear a bra professionally fitted and to ensure that any medical procedures such as injections, blood test or blood pressure readings are taken from the unaffected limb.
